Brief history

The Department of Infectious Diseases was organized in 1942 by docent Flanchik S.I. (1942-1945). From 1946 to 1961 the chair was headed by: doc. Goldfeld P.G., Prof. Rubinstein B.N., Prof. Shvarts N.I., Prof. A.M. Gubinsky, who made a lot of efforts for the formation of the Department of Infectious Diseases.

From 1961 to 1991 the department was headed by Prof. P.A. Alekseev, who made a great contribution to the  organization of the educational process and scientific activity of the department, to the development of the infectious disease service of the republic. A whole pleiad of outstanding infectious diseases physicians and scientists was trained: docent R.K. Suranchieva. Suranchieva R.K., docent. Glazunova M.G., docent. A.B. Sydykova, A.B. Baigeldieva, K.D. Janov, P.A. Abdikaimova, V.I. Emelyanova and others.

The main directions of scientific activity of the department were the study of regional and age specific features of the course of intestinal and zoonotic infections, the influence of natural-climatic and social factors on their course, the study of biocenotic and autoimmune shifts and their pathogenetic role in the infectious process. During this period, 2 doctoral dissertations and 10 candidate theses were defended.

From 1992 to 2005 the department was headed by Associate Professor V.E. Tyo. The exceptional talent of a teacher and doctor allowed Tyo V.E. to bring up a friendly and efficient team: Prof. Alymbayeva D.B., Prof. Kutmanova A.Z., Associate Professor A.B. Sydykova, Aitkuluev N.S., Abdykerimov M.M., Murzalieva G.A., Rusin A.I., Kolesnik O.N. Tyo V.E. created and formed a certain scientific direction of the department staff, arising from practical prerequisites in the field of infectious pathology of our republic. Under his leadership the researches on pathogenetic,           immunological aspects of brucellosis, typhoid fever, viral hepatitis, etc. were carried out.  During the period     of his chairmanship 2 doctoral and 4 candidate dissertations were defended, including 2 candidate dissertations under his direct supervision. Employees of the department carried out a lot of work to assist the health authorities in combating outbreaks of infectious diseases.

From 2005-2010 the department was headed by Prof. Kutmanova A.Z. Modern innovative teaching methods were introduced, research work was actively conducted, state programs to combat infections (HIV infection, malaria), as well as clinical protocols and guidelines were developed. The chair made a great contribution to the preparation and organization of the 1st International Congress of Central Asia on infectious diseases, where scientists from Turkey, Russia, Germany, USA, Kazakhstan participated (Bishkek, 2006).   Under her leadership at the department defended 3 candidate theses.

Since 2010 the department has been headed by docent, Candidate of Medical Sciences Dzhumagulova A.Sh., and during this period the department was formed into one of the successful subdivisions of KGMA with a high level of educational, methodological, scientific and therapeutic work. At present, the department employs highly qualified specialists and experienced teachers.  Among them, Professor, Dr. Suranbaeva G.S., Candidate of Medical Sciences Anarbaeva Zh. On December 8, 2023 the Department of Infectious Diseases held the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Modern Problems of Infectious Diseases" dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the department.

Disciplines

At the Department of Infectious Diseases, students from all faculties are trained in the discipline “Infectious Diseases”, including programs delivered in English:

  1. 5th year, General Medicine (9th–10th semesters, examination)

  4. 5th year, Pediatrics (9th–10th semesters, examination)

  7. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years, Higher Nursing Education (4th, 6th, and 8th semesters, credit)

One of the main priorities of the Department is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the educational process through the implementation of innovative teaching technologies. The Department actively employs student-centered and interactive teaching methods, including academic discussions, small-group work, gamification, clinical case analysis, and other active learning approaches.

Since 2010, the Department has published more than 20 methodological guidelines and 3 study manuals for  students and clinical residents, including publications in Kyrgyz and English.

A major achievement of the Department is the publication of the first book on Infectious Diseases in Kyrgyz language, authored by Assoc. Prof. A.B. Sydykova (reissued in 2019).

The Department also provides training program for clinical residents in the specialty “Infectious Diseases”, with up to 10–12 residents graduating annually. In the 2025–2026 academic year, 19 clinical residents are currently enrolled.

Scientific activities

The Department has significantly expanded its research activities. The primary focus is the comprehensive study of infectious diseases and the development of scientifically grounded approaches to the assessment of age-related characteristics, clinical manifestations, complications, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases.

Current research areas include:

  • Clinical, epidemiological, and immunological characteristics of tick-borne infections in the Kyrgyz Republic
  • Clinical and immunological characteristics of erysipelas and optimization of therapeutic and preventive interventions
  • Clinical and diagnostic aspects of measles in adults during epidemic outbreaks in the Kyrgyz Republic
  • Clinical and laboratory characteristics of COVID-19 among healthcare workers in the Kyrgyz Republic
  • Clinical and laboratory features of HIV infection in men, as well as the effectiveness of antiviral therapy for hepatitis C in HIV-infected patients
  • Generalized forms of meningococcal infection from an age-related perspective
  • Long-term outcomes of chronic viral hepatitis B, C, and D in the Kyrgyz Republic

Researches conducted by postgraduate students and young scientists are carried out in close collaboration with leading professors — G.S. Suranbayeva, A.Z. Kutmanova, and M.M. Abdikerimov.

During the period 2010–2025, Department staff  have published over 80 scientific articles and abstracts, including publications indexed in RSCI (21) and Scopus (5).

The Department also hosts the student scientific club “ Galen’s Conclave ”, which was awarded a Diploma for “Best Presentation of a Student Scientific Club” in 2019

Department staff actively participate in international conferences and training programs on current infectious disease topics, including events held in Annecy (France, 2015), London (UK, “MAME”, 2017), São Paulo (Brazil, World Hepatitis Summit, 2017), Urgench (Uzbekistan, 2023), Athens (Greece, 2024), Cairo (Egypt, 2024), Delhi (India, 2025), and Boston (USA, 2025).

The Department collaborates with international organizations, such as the Green Shoots Foundation “Medical Assistance and Medical Education” (UK) on HIV infection; the USAID M-RITE project on COVID-19 vaccination in the Kyrgyz Republic; and the Federal Budgetary Scientific Institution “Omsk Research Institute of Natural Focal Infections” of Rospotrebnadzor (Russia) .

Therapeutic and counseling work

The Department provides extensive organizational, methodological, consultative, and clinical support not only to the Republican Clinical Infectious Diseases Hospital (RCIDH) but also to other healthcare institutions across the Kyrgyz Republic. It regularly conducts clinical and pathological conferences, participates in the certification of infectious disease physicians, as well as in forensic medical examinations and other commissions of the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Department staff have participated in the development of the National Program for Pandemic Influenza Control, the State Program for “Stabilization of the HIV Epidemic in the Kyrgyz Republic,” the Target Program for Combating Viral Hepatitis in the Kyrgyz Republic, and others. They have also contributed to the development of national clinical guidelines and protocols (for HIV infection, viral hepatitis, parasitic diseases, typhoid fever, COVID-19, etc.), as well as Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic orders on epidemiological surveillance and prevention of numerous infectious diseases (plague, anthrax, cholera, rabies, typhus, monkeypox, etc.).

In collaboration with the KSMA Center for Continuing Education and Distance Learning, the Department conducts specialization and professional development courses for physicians across the country in the field of infectious diseases.

The Department in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic

With the onset of the epidemic and the declaration of a state of emergency in the country, Department staff were actively involved in combating COVID-19. By order of the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic, starting from February 10, 2020, Department employees were deployed to observation centers for COVID-19 contacts (including the Republican Clinical Infectious Diseases Hospital, Gansi Military Base, military hospital, hotels, and others).

Department staff were among the first physicians deployed to respond to COVID-19 outbreaks in the Ala-Buka (U.M. Sholpanbay, A.A. Jangaziyeva), Alay (Zh. Ibraeva), and At-Bashy (A.Sh. Dzhumagulova) districts. Throughout the entire COVID-19 outbreak, Department staff continued to work in the “red zone” with COVID-19 patients (2021–2022).

A.Sh. Dzhumagulova participated in the development of interim guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 and served on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic on COVID-19. During the pandemic, Department staff conducted training seminars for physicians and clinical residents on COVID-19, reaching over 1,000 participants.

In the ranking of departments at KSMA named after I.K. Akhunbaev, the Department of Infectious Diseases holds 4th–8th places.

For the 2020-2021 academic year, the Department was the winner of the “Best Department at KSMA” competition in the categories of “International Activities” and “Support for Practical Healthcare.”

For 2024–2025, the Department received the award for “Best Teacher” in the category of supervisory activities.

    

Department of Infectious Diseases celebrated its 80th anniversary. The event was held in a solemn atmosphere, bringing together faculty, staff, alumni, and students from different years. During the celebration, the Department’s achievements over its long history were presented, and the contributions of both veterans and the current team to the development of the clinical and scientific school of infectious disease specialists were recognized.

The anniversary became a significant milestone, highlighting the continuity of generations, the preservation of traditions, and the commitment to further enhancing educational and scientific activities.
