In 1941 at the Department of propedeutics of internal diseases was organized docent course on radiology, that was headed by Blochman Siegfried Ivanovich (Yosifovich).
In 1955, this course was transformed into the Department of Radiology. From February 1960 to 1986 the Department was headed by candidate of Medicine Ostapova Maria Efimovna.
From 1986 to 1992, associate Professor Aken Israilov was elected as head of the Department.
In 1990 the Department of Radiology was renamed into the Department of Radiology and Radiotherapy.
In 1992, the Department was included in the Department of Oncology and received the name "Department of Oncology, Radiology and Radiotherapy", which was headed by Professor H. S. Bebezov.
From 1997 to 2007 the Department was headed by doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Indira Kudaibergenova.
25.05.2007 by the decision of the Academic Council of KSMA the Department regained the status of an independent Department. It was headed by candidate of Medical Sciences Israilov Aken.
Since March 31, 2017 the head of the Department is candidate of Medical Sciences, associate Professor Aliya Kadyrova.
Today, the Department employs leading scientists and highly qualified teachers who are able to provide a high level of basic and professional training

Nowadays, the department employs leading scientists and highly qualified teachers who are able to provide a high level of basic and professional training. Of these, 1 professor and 4 candidates of medical sciences, who are actively involved in scientific work.
The department trains clinical residents, including foreign citizens (in English) in the specialty "Radiology", after which they successfully pass the general state exams in their countries.
Currently, postgraduate students are being trained in the specialty "Ultrasound diagnostics". Certification courses for radiologists (MRI) and ultrasound diagnostics doctors have been developed and are being implemented.
Today, courses on primary specialization and training of ultrasound specialists are being opened, as well as courses for the improvement of doctors of ultrasound diagnostics.
Scientific developments of the department are carried out in the following areas:
- Radiation diagnostics in gastroenterology, urology, pulmonology, oncology, endocrinology, gynecology, neurology using high-tech radiation methods
- Modern radiation diagnostics in dentistry and maxillofacial surgery using MRI, ultrasound, CT and cone-beam
- Minimally invasive ultrasound-guided interventions in oncological practice.
- Combined methods of treatment of malignant neoplasms of various localizations.
- The staff of the department are initiators and participants of several scientific projects:
- “Neuroimaging of cerebrovascular pathology and brain tumors, the current state of the problem in the Kyrgyz Republic. Improvement and prospects of early diagnosis and treatment of vascular and oncological diseases of the brain "
- "Endosonography: a new level of diagnosis in the Kyrgyz Republic" Goals and objectives: Improving the early diagnosis of tumor and non-tumor diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Initiative project "Detection of pulmonary manifestations of Covid-19 by methods of radiation studies"
- Initiative project on the topic: “Ultrasound diagnostics. High-quality higher education without borders "Purpose: promoting the mobility of the teaching staff of the Department of Radiation Diagnostics to participate in international scientific seminars, conferences, Olympiads, master classes, lectures abroad to present the results of their research to the international scientific community and increase the competitiveness of the university, get acquainted with the latest achievements of science and finding useful contacts.
- In the future, training of young teaching staff; further development of scientific directions in human radiation anatomy; early radiation diagnosis of tumors, chronic diseases of the joints, lungs, heart, gastrointestinal tract; in the sections of MRI and ultrasound angiography.
In 2018, 5 clinical residents of the Department completed the 5-months-lasted training course in Medical Imaging and Applications in the Uniiversity of Girona, Spain within the Erasmus+ programme, KA1 academic mobility component.
Also, Department's 2 teachers - Prof. Aliya Kadyrova and Assistant Begaiym Kulbaeva held guesture lectures for students of the University of Girona in Radiology.
In addition, in March 2019, another teacher - Assistant Irina Antipina - participated in training seminar on biomedical engineering within the framework of the KyrMedu project in the West-Saxon University of Zwickau, Germany.
Such kind of international activities help much in enhacing the training process at the Department, widen the experience and knowledge of teaching staff as well as students.
