Master's Degree Scholarship at Nagasaki University (Japan)
The Division of Disaster and Radiation Medical Sciences (DRMS) is a joint master's course, with a curriculum provided jointly by Nagasaki University and Fukushima Medical University. Graduates receive a master's degree issued jointly by the two universities.
As a result of negotiations and cooperation between KSMA and Nagasaki University (Japan), Nagasaki University, together with JICA, allocates an annual scholarship quota for KSMA graduates to study in the two-year master's program Disaster and Radiation Medical Sciences at Nagasaki University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (Master Course, Two Years). Under the Academic Cooperation Agreement between Nagasaki University and KSMA (March 2022), KSMA representatives have priority right to take part in the program. Tuition and study costs are covered by the JICA grant.
About the Master's Program
Specialties and degrees:
- Disaster and Radiation Medical Sciences — Medical Sciences Course → degree of "Master of Medical Science"
- Disaster and Radiation Medical Sciences — Nursing Course → degree of "Master of Nursing Science"
Language and format of instruction: classes in the Medical Sciences course are conducted in English, but students may also attend classes offered in Japanese at the Fukushima University medical center. Classes offered by Fukushima Medical University are delivered remotely via videoconference.
Duration and course completion requirements: studies last 2 years or longer; students must earn 34 credits or more, receive the required research guidance, and pass a master's thesis defense and final examination. The thesis defense may be waived in favor of significant academic achievements (a peer-reviewed publication, a conference presentation, etc.) if approved by the faculty meeting — in this case, students may complete the course after more than 1 year of study.
Required credit structure:
- Basic subjects — 12 credits or more (8 required + 4 elective)
- Specialized subjects — 12 credits or more (4 required + 4 required elective + 4 elective)
- Specialized training — 4 credits or more
- Research project — 6 credits
- At least 10 of the 34 credits must come from subjects offered by Fukushima University
Students without a medical background (graduates of economics, psychology, education, natural sciences, engineering, etc.) must additionally complete a Basic Medicine course (2 credits) in the first semester of the first year.
Nursing program: a separate training program for a Certified Radiological Nursing Specialist is also offered, for candidates holding a valid nursing license; the required credits for this program are provided separately.
If needed, certain classes and research guidance may be held in the evening (by arrangement with the academic supervisor, approximately 6:00 PM–9:10 PM on weekdays).

- Final-year students of all faculties (General Medicine, Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine (MPD), Higher Nursing Education (VSO), and Dentistry) — must hold a diploma by the time of departure to Japan
- Residents of any year and any department
- PhD students
- Faculty and teaching staff
Requirements for Applicants
- TOEFL certificate (minimum iBT 80), or IELTS 6.0 or above, or TOEIC
- Recommendation letter from an academic supervisor
- Completed application form
- Research experience (papers, publications) related to the program's subject area is welcomed but not required — genuine interest in the field matters most
- Citizenship of the Kyrgyz Republic
- Higher education degree
- Willingness to physically relocate to Japan for the duration of studies
