Establishment of the Centre for Biomedical Research and Innovation at the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy within the Quality and Innovation in Higher Education Project
Implementation period: 2025–2029
Total funding: 4,325,000 United States dollars
Source of funding: The Quality and Innovation in Higher Education Project, implemented in the Kyrgyz Republic with the support of the World Bank
Implementing institution: I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy
About the Project
Within the framework of the Quality and Innovation in Higher Education Project, I.K. Akhunbaev Kyrgyz State Medical Academy is implementing an initiative to establish a modern Centre for Biomedical Research and Innovation.
The Centre is being developed as an interdisciplinary research infrastructure that integrates advanced laboratory technologies, scientific research, human resource development, and international cooperation.
The establishment of the Centre is aimed at strengthening the research capacity of the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy, advancing contemporary biomedical science in the Kyrgyz Republic, expanding opportunities for high-technology research, and integrating research activities into the educational process.
Project Objective
The objective of the project is to establish a modern research and laboratory platform at the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy for conducting biomedical research, introducing advanced laboratory diagnostic methods, training scientific and professional personnel, and developing research activities in accordance with international requirements and contemporary approaches.
Main Areas of Activity of the Centre
Molecular Genetic and Biochemical Research
The project предусматривает the establishment of a modern laboratory base for conducting molecular genetic, biochemical, and other investigations of biological samples using advanced technologies, including polymerase chain reaction, next-generation sequencing, and other modern laboratory methods.
One of the priority areas will be the development of research on oncological, neurodegenerative, hereditary, and other socially significant diseases.
The development of this area will expand access to modern molecular genetic research within the Kyrgyz Republic, create favourable conditions for strengthening the national scientific base, and enhance the capacity of the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy to conduct research at an international level.
Pathomorphological Research
A modern pathomorphological laboratory will be established to conduct histological, cytological, immunohistochemical, and other morphological investigations.
The development of this area will expand the possibilities of morphological diagnostics, including in the field of oncology, and establish a modern foundation for clinical, morphological, and scientific research.
The laboratory will also serve as a platform for training specialists and introducing modern methods of pathomorphological analysis into the educational and research activities of the Kyrgyz State Medical Academy.
Bioequivalence Studies of Medicinal Products
Laboratory infrastructure will be established to conduct the analytical component of bioequivalence studies of medicinal products using modern methods for the quantitative determination of pharmaceutical substances and their metabolites in biological samples.
The development of this area is aimed at establishing national scientific and laboratory capacity in the Kyrgyz Republic for conducting medicinal product research in accordance with applicable international standards and regulatory requirements.
This will create a scientific and technological foundation for the further development of medicinal product research and cooperation with domestic and international pharmaceutical organisations.
